Expansion Plans
The decision to pursue the construction of an addtion to the Clarkston Conservatory of Music is a step forward for the Conservatory, for Clarkston, and the greater Oakland County arts community.
Successful as a music school, but now at capacity, the conservatory, with the new facility, will be able to accept additional students as well as open its doors to the community. Music is an important part of our cultural life, but its appreciation must be continually nurtured and musicians must be encouraged. At a time when schools are in budgetary crisis, and families are stretched to their limits financially, a musical and cultural oasis can open a window for the young, encourage the gifted, and welcome the citizen.
Our conservatory is one of the oldest buildings in Clarkston, dating from the 1840's. The design process is taking into consideration the historic nature and charm of the existing building. The new studio and recital space will complement without overpowering. It will be a modern facility with a traditional exterior. We are fortunate to have an architect whose concept matches our own.
The addition we envision is a space for teaching and performing, learning and observing, for students, musicians, and music lovers of all ages. It will be flexible enough to adapt to many different kinds of performances, not only musical, but collaborative projects with dance, theatre, film, and video.
